Breastfeeding Definitions


Australia and New Zealand use different breastfeeding definitions. This form uses a combination of these for breastfeeding in the past 48 hours:


  • Exclusive: only breastfeeds /only breastmilk (no other fluid or solid food except for medication)
  • Fully: only breastfeeds /only breastmilk (exceptions: water but no formula or non-human milk or solid food)
  • Partially: mostly breastfeeds /mostly breastmilk (exceptions: <20% some formula, solids or other non-human fluids)
  • Some: some breastfeeds / some breastmilk (but 80% formula, other non-human milk or solids 
  • None: no breastfeeds / no breastmilk (only formula and/or other fluids ot non-human milk products)
  • Never: has never had any breastfeeds or breastmilk
